Evaluate Navien tankless water heaters

Navien is a candidate for gas tankless domestic hot water. Select the configuration around winter flow demand, available gas supply, vent and drain routing, and any recirculation need. A family name or maximum flow headline is not enough to choose the unit.

Reviewed October 5, 2026: Navien's residential tankless catalog lists condensing NPE-A2 and NPE-S2 families alongside non-condensing offerings. Navien also sells space-heating and combi equipment, but this page concerns dedicated residential domestic water heating.

Make flow the first model check

Determine the likely simultaneous draws and the temperature rise from local winter inlet water to the intended outlet temperature. Ask the contractor to show the selected model's flow at that rise. The number in a general advertisement may describe warmer inlet conditions than your home experiences.

Use tankless sizing and the GPM calculator to prepare demand assumptions. If the proposed unit does not cover all fixtures together, ask which combinations it supports and whether a different model or another system type would be preferable.

Distinguish recirculation configurations

The current manufacturer catalog describes built-in recirculation features in the NPE-A2 family. Do not assume an NPE-S2 proposal includes the same pump, buffer arrangement, or accessories. Confirm the exact model and how the contractor will connect and control any recirculation system.

Proposed featureClarification to request
Built-in or external recirculationWhich equipment is supplied, and what extra plumbing is needed?
Existing dedicated return lineHow will it be connected and controlled?
Crossover arrangementIs it approved for this configuration, and what effect does it have on fixture operation?
Scheduled or on-demand operationWhat control strategy will be set at handover?
Remote controls or connectivityAre accessories included, and are they necessary for your purpose?

Recirculation addresses distribution delay; it does not increase the heater's fundamental winter heating capacity. It can also change energy use. Ask for those effects separately from the flow-sizing decision.

Inspect the gas, vent, and drain scope

A gas tankless conversion needs more than a wall-mounted appliance. The installer should evaluate the complete gas system, approved intake and exhaust arrangement, termination conditions, required condensate route for condensing equipment, and maintenance access.

Do not assume that a promotional claim about reusing a gas pipe applies to your house. Suitability depends on the model instructions and the actual supply arrangement. Ask the contractor to document the assessment. The venting guide and installation process help you review the proposed work.

Plan maintenance and service

Request service valves and access in the quote where needed for the specified maintenance. Ask how local water conditions influence inspection or descaling and use the exact manufacturer's instructions rather than a universal interval. A maintenance promise should name the provider and what the visit includes.

Obtain the model warranty and separate labor coverage. Ask who diagnoses fault codes, supplies parts, and handles a warranty claim. Use installers to vet the local business even if it appears in a manufacturer locator.
