Compare Water Heaters
The useful water-heater comparison is between two complete systems that can serve your household in your actual installation location. A technology label, efficiency number or equipment price cannot establish a winner by itself.
Start by choosing the comparison that matches the decision. Tank versus tankless concerns storage. Gas versus electric concerns fuel. Heat pump versus electric resistance concerns the heating method within the electric category.
Choose your decision
| Your question | Comparison | Evidence that decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Should I keep a tank? | Tankless versus tank | Peak-hour demand versus simultaneous winter flow |
| Should I change fuel? | Gas versus electric | Feasible installation, local rates and conversion scope |
| Should I replace gas with a heat pump? | Heat pump versus gas | Location fit, energy costs and installed premium |
| Is a heat pump worth comparing with a basic electric tank? | Heat pump versus electric resistance | Demand, operating mode, room conditions and net cost |
| Which upgrade should I quote? | Tankless versus heat pump | Supply infrastructure, demand profile and maintenance |
ENERGY STAR treats heat-pump storage, gas storage and gas instantaneous water heaters as distinct product categories with different performance requirements. A certification logo is useful evidence, but it does not make their installation or sizing needs identical. ENERGY STAR product criteria.
Make the comparison sheet
For each candidate, record the exact model, rated storage or flow, demand assumptions, efficiency usage bin, annual energy use and proposed operating mode. Record the electrical or gas work, ventilation, drainage, removal, permits and commissioning in the installation scope.
Ask both installers to address the same household demand and the same known site conditions. Comparing a bare appliance quote with a full conversion quote rewards missing scope. Use water heater cost and the cost calculator's installation-budget allowances to prepare comparable scopes without treating a planning estimate as a contractor offer.
Test the result against different conditions
An illustrative pair of quotes might differ by $1,200 after confirmed incentives. If the more expensive option saves $200 annually under one scenario, simple payback is six years. If it saves $80 under another, payback becomes fifteen years. Neither calculation includes financing, repairs, future rate changes or the value of solving a capacity problem.
That sensitivity is the point of estimating. Test the effect of winter inlet water, heavier demand, changed electricity rates and backup heating where relevant. Separate money spent to lower bills from money spent to improve delivery or replace failed equipment.
Choose when the evidence is complete
Use the size calculator or tankless GPM calculator to prepare sizing inputs, and check rebates before ordering. Apply our best water heaters guide to the resulting shortlist. A written assessment from qualified installers should close the remaining questions about fit, output, service access and the total project price.
