Use the calculator to explore the budget for one residential domestic water heater. Change the system, energy source, project type, and complexity to see which assumptions drive the range. Then compare the result with written local quotes for the same work.
What the budget includes
The calculation adds equipment, labor and ordinary connections, permit and inspection allowance, old-unit removal for a replacement, and any selected complexity allowance. Each line stays visible so you can compare scope with a contractor's proposal.
For an accessible replacement with similar connections, the current editorial allowances produce these starting ranges:
| System | Gross planning range |
|---|---|
| Electric storage tank | $1,200–$3,350 |
| Gas storage tank | $1,400–$3,850 |
| Electric tankless | $1,300–$3,550 |
| Gas tankless | $2,200–$5,550 |
| Heat-pump water heater | $2,400–$6,050 |
These are illustrative budgeting assumptions, not measured national averages or evidence that a contractor should charge a particular amount. The water heater cost guide explains the same scope. The calculator and cost articles use one shared allowance schedule reviewed October 5, 2026.
How complexity changes the result
The moderate scenario adds $400–$1,500 for some connection, venting, drain, or circuit changes. The major scenario adds $1,500–$4,000 for a substantial conversion or relocation. These broad allowances do not price a specific electrical panel, gas service, structural repair, or trench. Obtain a separate scope for major infrastructure.
A first installation removes the disposal line. It does not assume that a new gas line, electrical service, drain, or suitable equipment location already exists. Sales tax, emergency premiums, financing, structural repairs, hazardous-material work, and substantial utility infrastructure are outside the displayed assumptions.
Read installation cost for a new location and replacement cost for an existing unit. A heat-pump water heater also needs a viable air supply, service clearance, and condensate route.
How incentives are handled
No rebate is inferred from your system choice. Enter a dollar amount only after the administrator confirms your equipment, customer, installation, and application eligibility. Net cost is capped at zero; a large entered incentive does not imply a cash surplus or override a program's eligible-expense cap.
The federal 25C credit ended for expenditures or property placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS Form 5695 instructions. New 2026 projects therefore receive no automatic 25C deduction here. Check the rebate finder and tax credits guide separately.
Use the result to compare quotes
Ask each installer to name the model, list included permits and modifications, identify exclusions, and state who handles rebate paperwork. A price comparison is meaningful when the equipment and work are comparable. Return to the tools hub to check delivery requirements before choosing equipment by price.
