Water Heater Installation · Guide

Water Heater Installation Process

A good installation starts before the old heater is disconnected. The installer should confirm hot-water demand, the exact equipment, the location, and the work needed to make that combination safe and serviceable. The order below is a homeowner review checklist; the model manual and local inspector control the actual work.

Before installation day

Collect the existing model and serial number, fuel, tank capacity, photographs of hookups, and any symptoms. Tell the installer about large tubs, overlapping showers, and changes in occupancy. Use the sizing guide to describe demand rather than asking for the same gallon label by default.

Ask for a written proposal identifying equipment, labor, removal, permits, and alterations. A replacement that changes from a gas tank to a heat-pump water heater also changes the electrical, air, and condensate requirements. A tankless conversion may need a different fuel supply or vent route. These are project scope items, not accessories to discuss after purchase.

The installation sequence

StageWhat to confirm as the homeowner
AssessmentCapacity, service access, flood consequences, fuel and electrical suitability
PermittingWho obtains approval and arranges inspections
RemovalSafe isolation, draining, carrying route, and disposal included
PlacementClearances, support, protection, and access match the manual
ConnectionsPotable piping, energy supply, relief discharge, and required drains
StartupTank filled before energizing; checks appropriate to the equipment

You should not have to decide the technical adequacy of a vent or branch circuit yourself. Ask the responsible licensed trade to document the decision. The installation parent guide explains the scope across system types.

Commissioning is part of the job

Startup should include checks for leaks, operation, and the actual hot-water delivery. Gas equipment needs the combustion and vent checks specified by its manufacturer. Heat-pump equipment needs an operating drain path and adequate airflow. Record the final mode and temperature settings rather than assuming factory defaults suit the home.

A newly installed electric tank must be full before the elements are powered. Manufacturer guidance warns that dry firing can damage an element. See A. O. Smith installation guidance; its instructions supplement the exact unit manual.

Keep a complete handover record

Save the invoice, model and serial number, warranty documents, permit closeout, installer information, and any incentive application receipts. Ask where the shutdown controls are and what symptoms require a service call. Photograph the finished installation without removing covers.

If bids omit startup or inspection, use the installer selection checklist to clarify responsibility before signing. Price the entire scope using installation cost planning, then compare local proposals on the same basis.
