Evaluate Rinnai water heaters for domestic hot water
Rinnai is a candidate when you are considering gas tankless domestic hot water. Compare the exact model's flow at the home's required temperature rise, utility and vent needs, recirculation configuration, and service plan. Rinnai also currently lists heat-pump water heaters, which require a separate storage and site-fit comparison.
Reviewed October 5, 2026: Rinnai's tankless catalog lists condensing and non-condensing families, including RX and RXP configurations. Its residential catalog also identifies the REHP heat-pump series. Our scope here is domestic hot water; boiler and space-heating products are outside this page's purpose.
Size a tankless model for the actual draw
“Continuous hot water” does not mean unlimited simultaneous flow. Ask the contractor for the model's output at your winter inlet temperature and intended outlet temperature. That temperature rise can make a large difference to the flow a model can deliver.
As an original demand example, two 2-GPM showers running together require 4 GPM before any sink or appliance is added. Those fixture rates are illustrative, not a Rinnai capacity specification. Compare your measured or specified fixture flows with the exact manufacturer's performance curve using tankless GPM and the GPM calculator.
Compare the configuration you will install
| Model or system detail | Question for the proposal |
|---|---|
| Condensing or non-condensing | Which vent, termination, and drain requirements apply? |
| Exact model input and flow curve | Can it supply the household's simultaneous winter demand? |
| Included pump or recirculation accessories | What is supplied, and what plumbing and controls are added? |
| Indoor or outdoor arrangement | Which model or approved accessory supports the proposed location? |
| Electrical supply and freeze protection | How are model requirements met, including relevant outage limitations? |
| Service isolation and access | How will maintenance and future repairs be performed? |
Rinnai's family catalog identifies recirculation-equipped options, but features differ by model. Verify the actual accessories and installation arrangement. A pump does not make every home's existing piping a complete recirculation system.
Treat faster tap delivery as a system question
If the bathroom takes a long time to get hot water, ask how the proposal addresses the water sitting in the distribution pipe. Recirculation can change plumbing and controls, and it can add energy use. Request the intended schedule or on-demand strategy and the added installation price.
Use installation and venting to prepare the site-survey questions. A tank-to-tankless conversion should include gas capacity, vent routing, applicable condensate management, and service access in its completed quote.
Compare a Rinnai heat-pump model separately
For an REHP proposal, evaluate first-hour delivery, air access, ambient conditions, noise, condensate, electrical provision, and clearances using the exact manual. Do not apply a tankless flow comparison or a boiler specification to a heat-pump storage model. Our heat-pump water heater guide explains the relevant checks.
Confirm service and terms
Ask whether a local contractor installs and services the specific family, how warranty diagnosis is handled, and what labor is covered. Save the model warranty and any separate registration or installer terms. A network listing is a useful starting point, not a substitute for vetting the company through installers.
