Gas Water Heaters

A gas water heater burns natural gas or propane to heat domestic water. Gas describes the fuel; it does not identify whether the heater stores water, heats on demand, or uses a condensing design. Start with the available fuel, installation location and household demand, then compare specific models.

Existing gas service can make a replacement practical, but the new appliance still needs a verified supply and venting arrangement. The old heater's connections are evidence to inspect, not proof that every gas model is compatible.

Choose storage or on demand

Gas storage tankDoes first-hour delivery cover peak demand?Do dimensions, venting and fuel supply suit this model?

A.O. Smith's residential gas catalogue separates capacity, first-hour rating and vent configurations. Those are separate purchasing attributes; a gallon figure cannot substitute for the other checks. A.O. Smith gas water heater catalogue.

Use tank sizing for storage models and tankless GPM for instantaneous models. If the current tank runs short, identify when and for how long. A higher-output tank and a tankless conversion solve that problem through different capacity strategies.

Treat venting as part of the appliance

Ask the installer to name the approved vent configuration and confirm that the route, termination, combustion air and surrounding conditions meet the exact manual and local requirements. A change in heater technology may require a different vent system. Power requirements should also be stated: do not assume a gas appliance will operate through an electrical outage.

If a quote claims existing piping is adequate, request the assessment behind that conclusion. Include the other gas appliances and the proposed heater's input in that discussion. The venting guide explains the questions to put in writing; installation design and gas work belong with a qualified professional.

Compare operating cost fairly

Multiply estimated annual gas use by your own fuel rate. Distinguish natural-gas therms from propane gallons, include any relevant electricity use, and consider whether keeping or removing gas service changes a fixed bill charge. A gas utility's low variable rate does not automatically make every gas project the cheapest option.

For example, keeping gas service for cooking means a water-heater conversion may not remove the account charge. A home eliminating its last gas appliance creates a different cost comparison. Use running cost and gas versus electric to organize energy assumptions. Use the cost calculator separately for an itemized installation budget.

Get a complete installation quote and compare installed cost before selecting equipment. If electrification is feasible, include heat pump versus gas and verified rebates. Our best water heaters guide and installer checklist help turn the comparison into a scoped purchase.
