Water Heater Sizing · Guide

Water Heater Gallons

A water heater's gallon size describes storage, not an exact quantity of usable shower water or a fixed number of showers. The nominal size category, measured storage volume, water temperatures and recovery all affect how to interpret the label.

Read the exact model's specifications before comparing a 40-, 50-, 65- or 80-gallon category. Two tanks with the same nominal size can have different rated volumes, delivery and physical dimensions.

Rheem explains that modern labeling distinguishes nominal gallon categories from actual storage capacity. Its guidance also identifies first-hour delivery as a separate performance figure. Rheem capacity and labeling explanation.

Why mixed water is different

A fixture can mix hot water from the tank with incoming cold water. Under ideal mixing, the hot-water fraction is:

Hot fraction = (mixed temperature − cold temperature) ÷ (hot temperature − cold temperature).

For an illustrative hot supply of 120°F, cold supply of 50°F and mixed shower temperature of 105°F, the fraction is 55 ÷ 70, or approximately 0.79. A 20-gallon mixed draw would use approximately 15.7 gallons from the hot supply under those assumptions.

This is a heat-balance example, not a guaranteed shower count. Real tank temperature changes during a draw, water enters and mixes, distribution pipes lose heat, and the heater may recover while water is being used. Fixture performance and actual temperatures can differ from the assumed numbers.

Do not change temperature settings solely to obtain a larger calculated capacity. Hotter stored water changes scalding risk and may require an appropriate mixing and safety design. Ask a qualified professional about the existing controls and model instructions.

Compare delivery as well as volume

Use first-hour rating to evaluate the tank's delivery during the busiest hour. Then ask about recovery after that period. A large stored volume can support a short heavy draw, while repeated draws also depend on the heating system's recovery.

For a heat-pump water heater, include the intended operating mode in that discussion. A manufacturer performance figure and your desired compressor-only operation may not describe the same conditions. For a tankless system, gallons in storage are not the main sizing measure; use GPM at temperature rise.

Turn the label into a decision

Use what size water heater and the size calculator to prepare a realistic demand scenario. Have installers verify delivery and physical installation fit.

Compare complete replacement cost, verify model-specific rebates, and use best water heater criteria for efficiency and service support. Gallons narrow the shortlist; they do not finish the selection.
