Water Heater Maintenance · Guide

Water Heater Anode Rods

An anode is part of the corrosion-protection system in many storage water heaters. Conventional sacrificial anodes are consumed as they protect exposed metal inside the tank. Some units use different tank materials or powered protection, so identify the model before assuming it has a removable sacrificial rod.

Why inspection matters

The outside of a heater cannot show how much of a sacrificial anode remains. A maintenance plan should address inspection or replacement according to the manufacturer’s instructions, water conditions, and service findings. A warranty length is not an anode service schedule.

Water softening can change the maintenance decision. A. O. Smith’s water-softener bulletin explains that softened-water conditions can accelerate anode consumption and may call for more frequent checks. It does not mean every softened-water home needs the same replacement interval.

Find the correct component

Ask a service technician to verify the following before ordering parts:

QuestionWhy it matters
Which protection system does the model use?Sacrificial and powered systems are different
Where is the anode installed? It may have its own opening or share another fitting
Which replacement is approved?Fit, material, and manufacturer requirements matter
Is there removal clearance?A low ceiling may require an approved service approach
What does the warranty require?Unapproved modifications can affect coverage

Do not remove corrosion protection permanently to deal with an odor complaint. Have the water and equipment evaluated. A smell alone does not establish which part has failed, and an anode change does not disinfect an entire plumbing system.

Decide whether service is worthwhile

Inspection is useful on a sound tank with an accessible component. Severe external corrosion, active tank leakage, or uncertain vessel condition changes the decision. The technician should assess those problems before applying heavy force to old fittings.

Safety: Anode work involves a pressurized hot-water vessel and may be close to electrical or gas equipment. Correct isolation, depressurization, and approved parts are essential. Arrange professional service if you cannot follow the exact manual safely.

A new anode cannot repair a corroded hole in a tank. If the vessel itself is leaking, use the replacement guide rather than treating corrosion protection as a rescue repair.

Keep a useful record

Save the inspection date, protection type, component used, observed condition, and the next recommended check. Note whether the home uses softened water and whether plumbing or treatment equipment changed.

The maintenance overview connects corrosion protection with flushing, filter care, and symptom checks. Review the lifespan guide when deciding how much to invest in an older unit, and request an itemized repair estimate before approving work.
